How Can We Be A Better Fighting Game Community? Street Fighter 5 Podcast Discussion

We got together to have a long discussion on some things on our mind for Street Fighter V including the fighting game community as a whole. The passion and desire to have more new players while also dealing with negativity are all things we experience in a very difficult competitive genre.

We recorded this almost 2 weeks ago so the intro is kind of outdated. We were in the middle of a heavy discussion so we thought we would just record what's on our minds. Hope you guys enjoy it.

I really think the high level players should be attentive when the noobs ask for help.
Maybe they feel they're above doing that.
Noobs always come & ask for help & high level players are nowhere to be found instead they might say go watch a YouTube video or practice & get good.
It's not their obligation to help but that would allow the community to grow & they would extend that same gesture if they became a high level player themselves.
I'm not saying babysit a player but lend that valuable insight & then put the onus on the next person to help after that.
Fighting games are hard & every new player dreams of playing at a top level.

My first experience at a local tournament (a CPT major) was really bad. Not welcoming. As soon as people found out i was a beginner basically people were not "nice" anymore. I was not even bad, I just did not have "competition level".
I did not care about it and still got an awesome time. I even ended up meeting nice people that gave me advice and everything.
This is not an fgc issue or anything. This is how people are in general. Not everyone is welcoming nor nice and a lot of people are assholes. Professional players included and "champions".
I can see how someone going into a local with big expectations get totally cold and abandon fighting games. Especially if that person is socially awkward and doesnt understand that this is how social groups are and that you have to ignore and live with the bad because among them there is human gems that are awesome and incredibly cool people.

Big street fighter fan from the 90s but definitely don't enjoy the community at all rather play against the cpu honestly.

Some thoughts regarding this podcast. I'm a loner but I do appreciate the tech and comradery the FGC creates. That said, I don't feel much attachment to seeking out competition. Why the need to grow the FGC? Are we afraid our breed of gamers will vanish or something? Haven't we all discovered some fellow people to play with? Why the extra step to create a bigger community? I never quite understood. I guess it's a tourney playing and socializing thing really. Just way larger scale.
Tutorials, landing page, dev input and community. Everything has a lot of overlap. The topic on tutorials is of interest though because I've been examining multiple games and their approaches. They all "fail" because there's really too much information for the player. Too much character specific stuff. There's a point where a game holds your hand and shows you a lot without you having to think and then there's the games that do it just right. I think SFV's recent character demonstrations are a good hit. They don't tell you everything but enough to get you thinking up ideas or strategies. Everyone has an idea on how better to teach fighting games to people. Sometimes you just gotta let them figure it out for themselves. Tough love, very effective.

The whole “git gud” phrase is a common thing I see which is extremely toxic

Why do black characters have no eyebrows sagat is cool but cmon man give us fu**ing eyebrows. People steal our slang al day even try to rap for some reason but cant stand up for us when we are not being represted properly in pop media. Cmon fgc

The fgc could come together and stop capcom from releasing black characters that are clearly racist. How the fu** does birdie look less human than blanka. The latter looking more like a black man minus the green skin and wild hair. Birdie and balrog are disrespectful. Do all dark characters have to be ugly as sin?

You can think a game is trash and still want to see competition. A good example would actually DBFZ as of late (well before S3). That game was kind of horrible to watch with how long matches would drag along but watching Top 4 is bearable.

Good point about the attitude of the FGC. I remember a few months ago when I was a Silver I asked Vesper if he was willing to train anyone else(he was training RedGambit at the time). And I got roasted in the comments. People telling me I suck and to get better, learn the matchups, etc. It was surprising to see how much negative energy I got.
P.S. I made it to Super Platinum a couple months ago but had to stop playing cause of my hand injury.

If you feel toxic just eat a slice of pizza that should help

The tolerance paradox is an issue in the FGC, since being popular enough essentially entitles you to be an asshole without consequence.

I think the ideas are good in this video I might make a school or a group place to play fighting games

The part about western communities not wanting to play because you suck really resonated with me. I stopped going to my local for two years because I sucked and no one wanted to play me. Everyone says support your local but how can you support them when everyone there is only there to chase clout and pump up their fragile egos.
